Extracurricular school settings are an essential part of the school food environment but are often outside direct school regulation or are poorly enforced. Using legal analyses, this project will produce three issues briefs on (i) school stores, events, and concessions; (ii) fundraising; and (iii) open campus policies. These briefs will provide an overview of each area and will analyze and discuss legal and policy approaches to improve the food in each environment. The project will pay particular attention to enforcement and evaluation of existing wellness policies and will discuss additional legal options. The briefs are targeted for community officials, legislators, and school administrators. This project will seek to explore these legal issues as they relate to a wide range of youth populations, including racial/ethnic minorities and groups of low socioeconomic status.
