Americans spend nearly half of their food budgets eating out. In addition, a majority of American parents purchase one or more meals for their family at restaurants and fast-food outlets per week. Given the growing consumption of foods away from home, menu labeling may help consumers make healthier choices and encourage chain restaurants to offer healthier options. Research in this area evaluates the impact of menu labeling policies on consumer awareness of labeling in various food outlets such as fast-food restaurants, and on calories actually purchased and consumed. It also examines whether food outlets make changes to their menu offerings as a result of menu labeling.
