Establishing healthy beverage patterns during early childhood (ages 0 to 5 years) is important for promoting healthy growth and development in childhood and reducing risk of chronic diseases as an adult. Health care providers play an essential role in identifying and addressing unhealthy beverage consumption patterns in young children and helping families develop healthy beverage habits. The goal of this toolkit is to provide health care systems and providers with tools and resources to successfully incorporate and implement a beverage screener in the electronic health record (EHR). Inclusion of validated beverage screener questions in the EHR supports nationwide efforts to reduce children’s consumption of sugary beverages and provides an opportunity for widespread adoption and implementation of evidence-based recommendations.
